Volunteer Thailand Accommodation
Our Friends for Asia Volunteer House is the perfect spot to unwind after a day of volunteering in Thailand. Located in a quiet, safe, leafy neighborhood, only minutes from the center of Chiang Mai, our accommodation holds 10 people in four air conditioned bedrooms. Trust me, the air conditioned bedrooms are nice reprieve from the hot, sunny days of northern Thailand. Although the experience of volunteering in our projects is an amazing cultural experience, it’s nice to know that you can always curl up in our living room, watch English movies, Skype friends and family or surf the web with our free wireless internet, or e-mail via our Volunteer House computer.
Breakfasts of toast, cereal, eggs, oatmeal, yogurt, fresh fruit and aromatic, northern Thai Red Cliff Coffee, is available for all volunteers and interns each morning. Plenty of inexpensive, delicious Thai food restaurants, along with a large bakery specializing in fresh breads and western style lunches are within walking distance. Volunteers are also welcomed to put on an apron and show off their skills in our full kitchen after completing one of Chiang Mai’s many Thai cooking course.
Our friendly, knowledgeable and experienced Volunteer Coordinators work out of a small office area in the Friends for Asia House every day (even weekends). The Coordinators work hard to insure that your volunteer project runs smoothly. They also assist in all matters that volunteers come across during their project. A Thai travel agent visits the house regularly to assist volunteers in making additional travel arrangements and booking other activities, such as cooking courses, Thai massage courses, jungle treks and even bungee jumping.
Money matters can be taken care of at two different banks or four ATMs within a five minute walk of our accommodation. You may also take advantage of the nearby 7-11, although, we advise on supporting the local neighborhood shops. Laundry can be washed in our Thai style washing machine, though there are multiple laundry services that wash, dry and iron clothes for a fraction of what this costs in the west.
Elephant Camp Volunteer Accommodation
Elephant Camp Volunteers spend the week in tree houses that overlook a river and forest valley Monday to Friday. On weekends Elephant Camp Volunteers return to Chiang Mai, which gives them the opportunity to share their week’s stories with our staff and the friends they made during orientation. Although the house is comfortable and safe, the most important part of our Volunteer House, is the sense of community it provides and the friendships and connections made between our international volunteers during their stay.
Elephant Camp Accommodation
Waking up in the morning to the flowing river underneath your veranda, one can hear the calls of elephants, waiting impatiently for their morning bath. Suspended more than 20 feet off the ground, this type of accommodation is something you’ll never forget about volunteering in Thailand. The tree houses are rustic and unique. Unfortunately the tree houses are limited and need lots of upkeep. Therefore, in some cases volunteers also stay in guest rooms above the camp’s souvenir shop. All the accommodation at the Elephant Camp has electricity and hot water showers. Considering there is no internet or TVs at the camp, volunteers spend their evenings strolling around the camp’s grounds, helping the cooks prepare dinner and singing karaoke with their mahouts at the village’s only karaoke bar.
Summer Volunteering
Consider volunteering during the summer months. This is a good time to take some time off as well as give time to those in need. We offer flexible volunteering from 2 weeks to 2 months or more.
Mix and match a few different volunteer projects or dedicate your time to one project. Our professional staff are there to help and support you throughout the volunteer experience.
Volunteer Stories
Alex Jacobson, California, USA - Teaching Monks and Caregiving at Single Mother's Home, March, 2009“The Land of Smiles” is the perfect phrase coined for Thailand. Love radiates from this country through the smiles and warm greetings from the local people. Whether it was during my trip in Pai, the Friends for Asia home, or at either of my volunteer projects, I feel that I made many unexpected friendships!
James Kneafsey, Dublin, Ireland - Elephant Camp March, 2009
"It was a joy working at the Elephant Camp: waking up to elephants passing by my balcony in the morning, swimming with the elephants, eating like a king, pitching in with the work, building relationships with the staff and having a well earned beer at the roadside bar in the evening."
Anke Anemaet – Lelystad, The Netherlands – Teaching Monks July, 2010
“ENJOY YOUR STAY HERE! You will be sad to leave, as I am now. It’s hard to explain to the boys that you won’t be coming back next week and you have to go home. They have all been such lovely students. Each one of them has their own personality and you’ll love them all. Take pictures so that you can remember them forever. They have become so important to me, which is unexplainable. I will truly miss them a lot. ”
